Hout Bay has its own republic with its own passport- and its often been said we have our own time zone (about 5 minutes faster than Pretoria) Is their anything unique about the weather.
Actually being surrounded by mountain which meet the bay- it is quite common for Hout Bay to have a few degree differences when compared to other Cape Town suburbs.
Probably one of the strongest reason people come to Cape Town is her famed moderate climate. The old chestnut is that Cape Town has 4 seasons in one week. If there is any truth to this it is because there is not much extreme difference in "normal weather" There is moderate rainful throughout the year.
Summer is from December until February. Average temperatures range from 16- 30 degrees Celcius. Perfect beach days are when the thermometer creeps above 35 degrees- although this is not very often. Anecdotally speaking there seems to have been showers every Christmas day for the last few years. This tends to be the windiest time of year, and "the Cape Doctor" often puts in an appearance/
March to May - our Autumn- is described as our Secret Season- and is probably the best time to visit the Cape. The press of summer tourists have left but the temperature is still mellow and warm. The wind has generally died down- the vineyards turning golden and the oak trees losing their leaves.
June to August is our winter. The mercury very rarely drops much lowe than a few degrees. Visitors accustomed to central heating often find it difficult to adapt- because there are only a few weeks of cold most houses forget to pay much attention to heating. Most homes get by with a roaring fireplace and thicker blankets.
1st September is the official start of spring although of late, spring seems to have taken a few weeks later to put in an appearance.
The sun rises in the West from the Constantia Nek side and sets in the East literally overlooking the bay. In December the sun is usually setting above the harbour and 6 months later the sun is setting closer to the Suikerbossie hill (Llandudno)
